Congrats Dirk

Dirk Nowitzki did what no other Maverick had done before. He won something at the All-Star Weekend. Dirk had previously come up just short in 2000 and 2001, but kept it together (with a little help from no replay in the contest) to take home the title.

That wasn’t the most surprising thing of the night, though. Charles Barkley actually spoke highly of both Dirk and the Mavericks. He said they’re an impressive team, but they just need to do something in the playoffs to prove they’re really a contender. I agree with him. If Dallas is going to be a true powerhouse in the NBA they’ve got to be more succesful in the postseason. Until then, they’ll only be considered a second-tier team.

That’s fine with me, for now. They’re still a lot of fun to watch and have great team chemisty. Something you can’t say for a lot of other teams in the NBA.

FiOS TV Review Update

— This is an update to my original review. Check it out here.

I’ve had the service for a couple weeks now, so I thought I’d post my thoughts after I’ve had some time to really put it to the test.

First off, the HD picture on the HD channels in incredible. I know for sure it’s much better than what we had with DirecTV. The locals are a slight bit grainier than the national channels, but it’s not distracting. I’ve found that I only really want to watch stuff in HD on the 52″ screen. Verizon just added a new HD channel, MHD (Music HD with MTV, VH1, and CMT). I didn’t hear anything about it. It just showed up in the guide.

The downside to the great picture is the amount of space it takes up on the DVR. The SD shows don’t take up much space at all (maybe 1% per hour or so), but the HD shows hog a ton of space. For example, right now we have 8 hours of HD shows and 2 hours of SDÂ shows recorded. It’s taking up 45% of the recording space (160 GB). I don’t mind too much, since it just means I need to make sure to watch my recorded shows quickly. It could become a problem when we’re on vacation, though. I’ll take the limited recording space, for now, because I know the reason it takes up so much space is that the signal isn’t overly compressed. Hopefully Verizon will relase a DVR with a bigger hard drive sometime.
There are two problems that we’ve had using the DVR so far. Sometimes it won’t respond to ff/rw/play commands quickly. It’s annoying right now and if it keeps happening I’ll be calling Verizon to complain. The other problem has been FF/RW recorded HD shows. In the FF1/RW1 speeds the DVR doesn’t really move quickly.

Other than those two problems, it’s functioned fine. It hasn’t missed any scheduled recordings and overall has been satisfactory. I’ll post if I call Verizon about the DVR issues.

NBA Standings–Mavs vs Spurs

Being the Mavericks fan that I am, I was wondering why every national sports website had the Spurs listed ahead of the Mavericks in the standings. After doing some searching, I found the answer. Even though the Mavs and Spurs have the same overall record and are 1-1 against each other this year, the Spurs still technically have the tiebreaker since they have a better conference winning percentage. They are 18-4 (.818) against the West, and Dallas is 21-7 (.750). The order of the tiebreaker is: 1) Head-to-head; 2) Conference winning percentage; 3) Division winning percentage (only if the teams are in the same division); 4) Winning percentage against playoff opponents in the same conference; 5) Winning percentage against playoff opponents in opposite conference; 6) Better point differential.

I really think they should put division winning percentage above the conference in the tiebreaker when it comes to the division title. The seeding for the NBA playoffs gets thrown off now that there are 6 divisions. For example, if the season ended today Dallas would have the 4th seed behind San Antonio, Phoenix, and Denver. Dallas is 10 games ahead of Denver and 5.5 ahead of Phoenix. Getting the division seeding is extremely important, and it just makes more sense to me that in a tiebreaker scenario like this, the title should go to the team who did better in that division.

Goodbye DirecTV, Hello FiOS TV!

— Be Sure to Check Out My Newest Verizon FiOS Update Here

It’s official. I’m no longer a DirecTV subscriber. Verizon came out and installed Verizon FiOS TV and Internet at my house today. Here’s my initial review of the service.

The two installers arrived at 3:30 pm, which was right in the middle of the 1-5 window Verizon gave. The whole process was done at abour 6:45, which was a little under the 4-6 hour installation time they told me to be prepared for. The installers were very friendly and knowledgable. They had no problems throughout the entire installation.

Here are a few pictures of the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and battery backup:

For the internet service, they ran a Cat5e cable from the ONT along the outside of my house (hid just underneath the roof overhang) to my office, which connected to the wireless router they provided (D-Link DI-624). They used my existing coax cable, that previously ran to my Comcast Cable modem, to connect to the Network Interface Module (NIM, Model – Motorola NIM100). The NIM is required to access Video-On-Demand and Pay-Per-View shows. Also, I believe the NIM will one day be used to watch DVR recorded shows from any Set Top Box (STB) in the house. This feature is not yet enabled, and I really hope they enable it soon. Here are some pictures of the router and NIM:

The installers told me that the “Cable Out” connection wasn’t enabled. But that’s not true. I connected a small tv in the office to the connection and I was able to access the basic cable channels (about 15 channels).

Now on to the DVR. The DVR STB provided by Verizon is a Motorol DVR QIP6416-1. I was surprised that there was only one RF input. With the DirecTV system, there was an input for each tuner. This unit is able to record one show and watch another. It comes with a 160GB hard drive. They provided a component cable, but I connected it to my tv with an HDMI cable. Here are some pictures of the unit:

Overall, I’m very impressed with the DVR. My first DVR was an Ultimate TV. The Motorola system is Microsoft based, so it is very similar to what I was used to with that. In comparison to the HD DirecTivo that we were using, I’m much happier with the new Verizon DVR. The DirecTivo was very slow switching from tv to menus. I also really like being able to set up a series to be recorded by pressing record twice in the guide. It was a hassel having to jump through multiple menus in DirecTivo menus and then sitting there waiting for about 45 seconds for it to decide it was ready to go. The Verizon DVR is almost immediate when you press record.

Overall, the Verizon DVR is superior to the HD DirecTivo in almost every way. I liked being able to pause one live show and then change tuners to watch another channel with Tivo. I can do this in theory with my new one by recording two shows, but the functionality of the DirecTivo was a little better. The other way the DirecTivo was better was the look of the guide and the menus. The fonts were easier to read and looked a little more current. The Verizon makes up for it, however, by being able to see a thumbnail of the show you’re watching when you’re in a menu. It’s worth the trade-off. Here are some comparison shots between the two.

The biggest flaw of the DVR is the lack of any sort of Wishlist feature. I assumed it would have one, since UltimateTV had it, but I assumed wrong. I never used it on the DirecTivo though, so I won’t really miss it.

One menu that DirecTivo doesn’t have is Verizon’s Mini-Guide. Here’s a picture of that:
FiOS Mini Guide

Overall, I’m very pleased initially. Normally when I buy a new gadget or service, I’ve built it up so much in my mind that I’m somewhat disappointed. That didn’t happen with Verizon FiOS. I’m really happy with the channel selection. The only channel that I know I don’t have anymore is OLN (and I don’t watch NHL games or the Tour de France, so I won’t miss it). They also don’t have the NFL Sunday Ticket or NBA Season Pass (that I know of). So if you’re tied to those, you’ll be let down.

The biggest factor that motivated my to switch was the HD channels. Verizon offers all of the local broadcasts in HD and national HD broadcasts as well. I’m happy to now have TNT HD for NBA games (would’ve been nice to have Thursday night when the Mavs were on). The picture quality for the HD channels is at least as good as DirecTV was, if not slightly better. I haven’t noticed any difference in the standard channels.

The other feature I like a lot is the VOD. There are a BUNCH of free shows in from different categories. I like the sports options they have most. There are also selected music videos available. The movie selection is pretty good too. There are quite a few new movies (new to DVD, that is) available, such as: Batman Begins, Cinderella Man, Madagascar and a lot more available for $3.95. They also have a fairly extensive selection of older movies available for $2.95. Once you choose a movie, you’re able to watch it for up to 24 hours.
You can read more about FiOS TV from Verizon’s website. If you have any questions about the service, please comment and I’ll respond.

I notice in the screen shots that you are using the “grid guide” for both TiVo and Verizon DVR. Any chance that the Verizon DVR has a guide view closer to the normal TiVO style?

I never knew there was a different guide with Tivo. Maybe it wasn’t available with DirecTivo. If the normal Tivo guide style you’re talking about is the one that lets you view all the upcoming shows on a particular channel in the guide then yes–in at least a similar way. In the guide, if you highlight and select the channel it will show you the upcoming shows on that channel.

How does the season pass manager handle sports teams with games being on different nights and times? Is it able to do that?

From what I can tell, there is not a season pass type function that will automatically record based on specific criteria. You can seach for the actor/team name, but you have to manually choose to record from the search results.

Does Charles Barkley Even Watch NBA Games?

It’s official. Charles Barkley has proven once again that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about in the NBA. Right after the Mavericks beat Seattle tonight, he wasn’t in his seat at the post-game show. You would think if you’re going to be considered an NBA expert, you’d watch NBA games. I guess that doesn’t matter anymore.

Charles has over the years made statements about the Mavs that he didn’t even try to back up with statistical data. Here’s an example from tonight’s post-game show: “Phoenix and Dallas, they’re offensive minded teams. But some nights your shot just doesn’t go. I mean, the best shooters in the world shoot 50%. So, there’s gonna be nights when you shoot 35-40%. Can you get stops consistently? Phoenix and Dallas have not shown they can do that.”

First off, how can you compare Dallas to Phoenix? The teams in no way resemble each other. I’m not interested in looking at Phoenix’s stats. But are the Mavericks really an offensive minded team? Let’s see.

The Mavericks are averaging 99.8 points per game this year. That’s 8th overall behind Phoenix (106.2), Seattle (102.3), Philadelphia (101.3), Denver (100.6), Washington (100.1), Miami (100.0), and DETROIT (100.0). I’ve never heard Charles Barkley criticize the Pistons for being Offensive minded. In fact, they’re always looked to as one of the most dominant defensive teams in the league. And yet, the Mavericks are thought of as being more offensive minded than defensive. I guess if you’re in the top 10 in the league in scoring that could be a legitimate point.

But what about defense? Since the Mavericks are so busy scoring all those baskets, I guess they’re not worried about slowing teams down. Guess again. Dallas is 9th overall in points allowed per game, allowing just 93.7 per game. The top 8 are Memphis (87.0), San Antonio (88.1), Detroit (90.6), Minnesota (90.9), Indiana (91.6), Houston (91.8) NO/Okla City (93.0), and Utah (93.0). Even though they’re in the top 10 in points allowed, they’re never thought of as a defensive team by Barkley. And by the way. Dallas is 3rd overall in point differential per game (+6.1) behind Detroit (+9.4) and San Antonio (+6.7).

So what about Charles question, “Can you get stops consistently?” The Mavs haven’t done great at this. In the seven games this year when the Mavericks shot between 35-40%, they are 3-4. That’s not great, but is it really that bad in comparison to other teams? Let’s take Charles Barkley’s favorites. The Spurs and Pistons. In the 5 games this year that San Antonio shot 35-40%, they were 2-3 (and one of those losses was to the “offensive-minded” Mavericks). And finally, those hard-nosed defensive-minded Pistons are 5-4 when they shoot 35-40%.

My point is that when you don’t shoot well, you’re not as likely to win. The Pistons have only lost five games all year, and four of those are in games they didn’t shoot well. Yes, defense is important and will win you game. But you still have to shoot well. Charles Barkley has become just a talking head. The only reason anyone pays attention to him is that he used to play in the NBA. When it comes to the Mavericks, he’s just plain blind. He doesn’t pay attention to factualy information and just spouts out personal, subjective opinion.

Charles, do yourself a favor and start watching some NBA games. You might actually make a valid observation one of these days.

My Blog

I just realized my blog has had some issues for a while. If you’ve tried to leave a comment you know this since it hasn’t let anyone leave comments. Also, the pages looked fine in Firefox, but not in IE (which is another reason you should switch to FF if you haven’t yet). Anyway, I’ve changed the theme for now while I work on a new one. If you have any ideas/suggestions for the look of the site feel free to leave a comment.

Kobe’s 81 Point Game

How did Kobe score so many points in one game? Did it have anything to do with it being his 666th career game??? Coincidence? Probably. But it’s still really odd. Take a look at his career totals here. (Just make sure you look at it before the Lakers play Friday).

It’s also a little weird that he apparently calls his workout routine the “666 routine”. Which stands for 6 hours a day, 6 days a weeks, 6 months a year. Or it could stand for him being the antichrist.

Linux Distribution Screencasts

This is probably the best site I’ve seen that gives you an inside look at Linux. LinClips.com is a Linux resource which illustrates desktop Linux distributions through screencasting. Each distribution video clip is approximately two minutes in length.

What I like best about the site is that you don’t have to download and burn a Live CD/DVD to see what it’s like. If you’re just curious what Linux is all about, this is a good place to start.
